Rita wanted to enter religious life as a young girl, but her parents arranged her marriage instead, to a man known for his harsh temper and involvement in local feuds. She endured nearly two decades of a difficult marriage, remaining patient and faithful even as her husband's violent lifestyle put the family at constant risk. He was eventually murdered in a vendetta, and rather than seek revenge, Rita worked to reconcile the feuding families, even after losing both of her sons to illness shortly after. Widowed and alone, she was finally accepted into an Augustinian convent, where she spent forty years in prayer and mystical devotion. While meditating before a crucifix, she asked to share in Christ's suffering, and a thorn from his crown reportedly detached and embedded itself in her forehead, a wound she carried for the rest of her life. On her deathbed in the dead of winter, she asked for a rose from her childhood garden. Her cousin found one in full bloom. She was canonized in 1900 and remains one of the Church's most beloved intercessors for circumstances that feel beyond hope.
