In 1802, workers excavating the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome uncovered the tomb of a young girl, sealed with tiles bearing the inscription "Pax Tecum Filumena," peace be with you, Philomena, alongside symbols of an anchor, arrows, and a palm branch, traditionally read as signs of martyrdom. For decades afterward, little was known about who she actually was. That changed when an Italian nun, Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù, reported receiving a vision describing Philomena as a young Greek princess martyred under the Emperor Diocletian in the early 300s, thrown into the Tiber with an anchor around her neck and shot with arrows before finally being beheaded, and surviving each attempt until the last through what devotees believed was angelic intervention. The story spread rapidly, and miracles attributed to her intercession followed, most famously the healing of Venerable Pauline Jaricot in 1835. Pope Gregory XVI permitted a feast day and public devotion in 1837, and Philomena became one of the most beloved saints of the nineteenth century, with Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, among her most devoted advocates. Because her story rests on a private vision rather than independent historical evidence, her feast was removed from the universal Church calendar in 1961. The Vatican has never declared she didn't exist, and devotion to her, including her title "Patroness of the Living Rosary," remains active and permitted today.
