Saint Dymphna, Patron Saint of Anxiety and Mental Health

Dymphna was born in 7th century Ireland, daughter of a pagan chieftain and a devout Christian mother. When her mother died, her father's grief turned into madness, and he became fixated on Dymphna, who had grown to closely resemble her. She refused him, fled with her confessor, and eventually settled in Geel, Belgium, where she used what remained of her wealth to care for the sick and poor. Her father found her, and when she refused him again, he killed her confessor and then Dymphna herself. She was 15. After her death, people suffering from epilepsy and mental illness who came to Geel began reporting healings at the site of her martyrdom, and the town's response became extraordinary. When the church could no longer hold everyone who arrived seeking help, the residents of Geel began opening their own homes to them, not as charity cases but as members of the household, a practice that continues today and has drawn the attention of psychiatrists as one of the most humane models of community care ever documented.

A Gift For...

  • Someone managing anxiety, depression, or a hard season that's hard to explain to others
  • Anyone who has had to leave something or someone that was supposed to be safe
  • A parent praying for a child they feel they cannot reach
  • Someone who cares for a person living with mental illness
  • A confirmation gift for a young person who sees their own struggle reflected in her story
  • Anyone named Dymphna, for a birthday or personal milestone

A Confirmation Gift for Dymphna

Choosing Dymphna for confirmation is rarely casual. It's an acknowledgment, often quiet, of something the young person receiving her is actually living through. Name and date, engraved on the back.

The Saint Dymphna Medal

This medal depicts Dymphna facing forward, head slightly bowed, eyes downcast in quiet prayer, holding a lily and a book against her chest. The lily references her purity and her title, Lily of Éire, the book her faith, the foundation of everything she refused to abandon. A mandorla style halo frames her head, and the composition is still rather than dramatic. She is shown as she was before her martyrdom, young, composed, and holding what mattered most to her. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface.

Personalization and Engraving

The optional engraving on the reverse is rendered in Tangerine cursive. Two lines, up to 20 characters each. Two lines that fit: "She carried it" and "with grace." For a gift to someone managing anxiety, depression, or a hard season, most people engrave the recipient's name and a meaningful date.

Saint Dymphna's feast day is May 15. She was 15 years old when she died in Geel, and the town has been caring for the broken and the suffering in her name ever since.

The Metal Is the Image

Unlike stamped or printed medals, our black ink artwork is applied directly onto the surface, so every bright line in the illustration is the metal itself shining through, with detail no stamped medal can hold.

Hand-Poured Seal

Sealed with a durable, crystal-clear liquid glass coating to protect the vibrant image for a lifetime.

Exclusive Artwork

Custom-illustrated in-house, ensuring every saint's depiction is completely unique to our store.

FAQ

How long does production take?

Each medal is made to order in the USA. Production takes 5-6 business days before shipping. If you need it for a birthday, confirmation, or any specific occasion, order at least two weeks in advance to be safe.

What does the engraving look like?

The reverse is engraved in Tangerine cursive — an elegant, flowing script. You get two lines, up to 20 characters each. Names, dates, short quotes. The engraving is laser-etched directly into the metal, not printed.

Is the chain included?

Yes. Every medal ships on an 18-22" adjustable snake chain in the same finish as the medal - stainless steel or 18k gold. No need to source a chain separately.

Are the medals hypoallergenic?

Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

How durable is the coating?

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.

What's your return policy on engraved orders?

Because every medal is custom-made to order, engraved pieces cannot be returned unless there's a defect or error on our part. If anything arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us and we'll make it right.
