Brigid was born around 451 near Dundalk, the daughter of an Irish chieftain and an enslaved Christian woman, and was raised partly in a druid's household before committing herself to religious life. Around 480 she founded a double monastery at Kildare, home to both monks and nuns, with herself as abbess over the whole community, a position of authority unusual for a woman in fifth-century Ireland. The monastery's scriptorium later produced the Book of Kildare, praised by medieval visitors as one of the most beautiful manuscripts they had ever seen, since lost. She is honored today as one of Ireland's three patron saints, alongside Patrick and Columba, and her associations with healing, poetry, and craftsmanship trace back to attributes she may have inherited from an earlier Celtic figure of the same name.
