Columbanus was born in 543 in Leinster, Ireland, into a prominent family, and by his own account was young, good-looking, and drawn to exactly the kind of life that worried the devout woman who eventually warned him to change course. He entered the monastery at Bangor and spent decades there before setting out around 590 with twelve companions as "peregrinati pro Christo," wanderers for Christ, never intending to stay anywhere for long. He founded monasteries across what is now France, most notably Luxeuil, converting thousands along the way, including a king, before being banished from Burgundy for openly rebuking the ruler's morals. Rather than settle down, Columbanus crossed the Alps at seventy years old and founded one final monastery at Bobbio, Italy, before retiring to a nearby cave to live out his final years as a hermit. He died there in 615. In 2002, an Anglican bishop who was also an avid motorcyclist proposed Columbanus as patron of bikers, recognizing in his restless, road-bound life something genuinely familiar, and the Vatican made it official. He remains one of the few saints whose modern patronage grew directly out of his own real, lived character rather than a stretch or a legend.
