Fiacre was born in Ireland at the end of the sixth century, raised in a monastery where he learned the use of healing herbs, and ordained a priest before retreating to a hermitage seeking real solitude. Even there, his reputation for holiness drew crowds, so around 628 he left Ireland entirely and settled near Meaux, France, where the local bishop granted him a plot of forested land. Fiacre built himself an oratory, a hospice for travelers, and a garden of vegetables and healing herbs that became genuinely famous, people came from considerable distances seeking cures worked simply by his hands and his knowledge of plants. He lived out the rest of his life there in prayer, fasting, and the quiet daily labor of tending his garden, dying around 670. Centuries later, his name found its way into an unlikely second legacy: a Parisian hotel renting horse-drawn carriages near the Hôtel Saint-Fiacre gave rise to the word "fiacre," meaning a hackney cab, and Fiacre became, almost by accident, the patron saint of cab drivers too.
