About Saint Teresa of Ávila

Teresa of Ávila was 39 years old when she had the experience that changed everything. She was standing before a statue of the wounded Christ and was struck, she wrote later, by a sudden overwhelming awareness of how little she had given him in return for everything he had suffered. She went to her knees and did not get up until she had resolved to give everything. She was 39. She spent the next 43 years doing exactly that.

She reformed the Carmelite order, founding 17 convents across Spain between 1562 and her death in 1582. She wrote three books - The Way of Perfection, The Interior Castle, and her autobiography - that remain the definitive texts on contemplative prayer in the Catholic tradition. In 1970 Pope Paul VI named her a Doctor of the Church, making her the first woman in history to hold that title.

She also danced. She played the tambourine with her sisters at the Carmel and believed that authentic spiritual life required joy as much as sacrifice. She said: "From silly devotions and sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us!" She meant it.

Saint Teresa of Ávila's feast day is October 15. She died in 1582 at age 67, having just returned from founding her last convent. Her final words were: "My Lord, it is time to move on. Well then, may your will be done. Oh, my Lord and my Spouse, the hour that I have longed for has come."

Her Patronage

She is the patron saint of people with headaches and migraines, of the sick, and of Spanish Catholic writers. The headache patronage comes from her own documented history of severe illness - she suffered debilitating migraines and a near-fatal illness in her early thirties that left her partially paralyzed for three years. She understood physical suffering from the inside, which is why people who carry her medal are often asking for relief from exactly the kind of chronic pain she knew herself.
