Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in Naples in 1696 and trained first as a lawyer before turning to the priesthood after losing a major case, a shift he took as a sign of where his real calling was. He founded the Redemptorists, a religious order focused on preaching to the rural poor who had little access to the Church otherwise, and became renowned as a moral theologian, writing extensively to guide confessors toward a more compassionate, less rigid approach to hearing confession. He authored well over a hundred works in his lifetime, including devotional writings still read today, all while enduring years of severe, worsening arthritis that eventually curved his spine and confined him largely to a chair. He died in 1787 and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871, one of the highest honors the Church grants a theologian.
