Jerome was born around 347 in Stridon, on the border of what is now Croatia and Slovenia, and educated in Rome, where he became fluent in Latin and Greek rhetoric before undergoing a profound conversion to a stricter, more ascetic Christian life. He traveled to the Syrian desert to live as a hermit, then eventually settled in Bethlehem, where he spent the last decades of his life translating the Bible directly from its original Hebrew and Greek into Latin. The result, known as the Vulgate, became the standard biblical text for the Western Church for well over a thousand years and remains in use today. Jerome was famously difficult, sharp-tongued, and uncompromising in scholarly disputes, but also deeply devoted, living in voluntary poverty and constant study until his death in 420. Medieval legend added a gentler story to his fierce reputation: that he once removed a thorn from a lion's paw in the desert, and the healed lion stayed by his side as a devoted companion for the rest of his life. He is recognized today as one of the four great Doctors of the Latin Church, alongside Augustine, Ambrose, and Gregory the Great.
