Saint Louise de Marillac, Patron of Widows and Social Workers

Louise married Antoine Le Gras in 1613 and was widowed in 1625, a loss that followed a formative spiritual vision she'd had two years earlier during Pentecost Mass, one that convinced her Vincent de Paul was meant to guide her. Together they founded the Daughters of Charity in 1633, breaking with convention by refusing to cloister their sisters, sending them instead directly into hospitals, orphanages, and eventually battlefields to serve the poor where they actually lived. It was a path shaped in part by her own early rejection from a Capuchin convent, an experience that became the root of her lifelong patronage of those turned away by religious life. She was canonized in 1934.
