Elizabeth was born a Hungarian princess in 1207 and married Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, at fourteen. Widowed at twenty, she used her recovered dowry to build a hospital in Marburg, where she baked and carried bread to the poor herself rather than sending it through servants, a habit so consistent it became her defining image. She died at twenty-four and was canonized just four years later, in 1235, one of the fastest canonizations in Church history. She's remembered less for her royal title than for what she carried in her own hands.
