Saint Isabella of Portugal, the Peacemaker Queen

A Spanish-born princess who became Queen of Portugal in 1288, Isabella spent her life doing what her royal title didn't require of her. In 1323 she rode a mule onto the battlefield at Alvalade to stop her husband, King Denis, from going to war with their own son. In 1336, near the end of her life, she traveled again to broker peace between her son and the King of Castile. Widowed in 1325, she gave away her wealth, founded the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, and retired there as a Third Order Franciscan. She's remembered in art for a lap full of roses, tied to a legend that alms she was secretly carrying to the poor turned to flowers when she was stopped and questioned. She was canonized in 1626.
