Clare was born Chiara Offreduccio in 1194 to a noble Assisi family. Inspired by Francis of Assisi's preaching, she gave up her inheritance at eighteen and founded the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the Poor Clares, becoming the first woman known to have written her own monastic rule. She cared for Francis through his final illness, and in 1240, when soldiers attacked her convent, she is said to have repelled them by praying before the exposed Blessed Sacrament rather than fleeing. Centuries later, an account of her miraculously seeing and hearing a Midnight Mass from her sickbed, when illness kept her from attending in person, led Pope Pius XII to name her patron of television in 1958.
