Joseph was born in 1603 to a poor family in Copertino, Italy, his father a carpenter who died before he was born. As a child and young man, he was considered slow, unteachable, and prone to drifting off into trances mid-conversation, traits that made him the object of ridicule and nearly kept him out of religious life entirely. He was initially accepted only as a lay servant, and his path to ordination was so academically difficult that tradition holds he passed his examinations only through what witnesses saw as providential coincidence. Once ordained, Joseph began experiencing ecstatic trances during prayer, during which he would rise into the air, sometimes drifting toward altars, into trees, or across rooms. At least seventy of these levitations were formally documented over the years, witnessed by hundreds of people, including skeptics, scientists, and Pope Urban VIII himself. The phenomenon brought him fame he never wanted, his superiors moved him repeatedly to avoid crowds, and some accused him of witchcraft. Through all of it, Joseph remained humble and devoted. He died in 1663 and was canonized in 1767, remembered today both for his flight and for his own hard-won, unlikely path through school.
