Henry II was crowned King of Germany in 1002 and Holy Roman Emperor in 1014, the last ruler of the Ottonian dynasty. In 1007 he founded the Diocese of Bamberg and built Bamberg Cathedral, one of the era's great architectural achievements, a legacy that still stands today. He married Cunigunde of Luxembourg in 999, and though their marriage lasted twenty-five years, they never had children; tradition holds the couple may have taken mutual vows of chastity out of piety, though historians still debate it.
