Saint Cunigunde, Empress and Wife of Saint Henry II
Cunigunde married Henry II in 999 and was crowned alongside him as Queen of Germany in 1002, then as Holy Roman Empress in Rome in 1014. Accused at one point of misconduct, tradition holds she was miraculously vindicated. After Henry's death in 1024, she served briefly as regent before founding Kaufungen Abbey, a vow she'd made during a grave illness, and entering it herself as a nun in 1025, spending her remaining years there in charity and prayer. She was canonized in 1200, 53 years after her husband, making the two of them one of history's rare married couples both individually recognized as saints. She's patroness of Luxembourg and of the Archdiocese of Bamberg, the diocese she and Henry founded together.
