About Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Catherine of Alexandria was 18 years old when she walked into the court of Emperor Maxentius and challenged him publicly for persecuting Christians. He assembled 50 of the empire's most learned philosophers to argue her down. She converted every one of them.

What followed was a sequence of failed attempts to break her. He offered her a place beside him as empress. She refused. He imprisoned her. During her imprisonment, she converted the empress, a senior military commander named Porphyrius, and 200 soldiers - all of whom were executed. He then ordered her bound to a spiked breaking wheel. It shattered when she touched it. He finally had her beheaded in 305 AD. According to tradition, angels carried her body to Mount Sinai, where her relics remain today at the monastery that carries her name.

She was exceptionally educated - versed in philosophy, rhetoric, and theology before her twentieth year. She used all of it in direct confrontation with the most powerful authority in the world and did not survive it. The Catholic Church venerates her as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saints recognized for particularly powerful intercession, and has done so for over a thousand years.

Her Patronage

Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of philosophers, scholars, students, teachers, and lawyers. She is invoked by anyone whose work requires arguing what is true in front of people who hold more authority, more credentials, or more institutional weight than they do.

She is one of the most chosen confirmation saints for Catholic girls - particularly those who are academically serious, intellectually driven, or entering a field where they will need to defend what they believe with precision and courage.
