Adrian was a high-ranking Roman military officer, head of the praetorium under Emperor Galerius in Nicomedia. Part of his role was overseeing the torture of imprisoned Christians, until their composure in the face of suffering struck him so deeply that he confessed his own faith on the spot, before he'd even been baptized. He was immediately imprisoned and executed in 306. His wife Natalia, who visited him in prison disguised as a boy, later recovered one of his hands after his death. Centuries later, Adrian remains venerated as patron of soldiers, guards, and butchers, and is honored today as the official patron saint of at least one national prison service, a role that traces directly back to his own time on both sides of a cell door.
