About Saint Sebastian

Sebastian joined the Roman army in 283 AD - not for the career, but because his position gave him access to Christians who were being imprisoned and executed under Emperor Diocletian's persecution. He rose to captain of the Praetorian Guard, a position of genuine power, while secretly using that power to protect the people the emperor was trying to destroy. He converted soldiers, warned communities, helped prisoners, and funded those in need out of his own money. Neither Diocletian nor his co-emperor Maximian knew he was a Christian.

When they found out, Diocletian ordered him taken to a field, tied to a post, and executed by archers. The archers shot him through and left him for dead. A Christian woman named Irene came to retrieve his body for burial and found him still breathing. She took him home and nursed him back to health over weeks. When Sebastian had recovered, rather than flee Rome or go into hiding, he went back to the palace and confronted Diocletian directly - standing in front of the man who had ordered his execution and denouncing him for his cruelty to Christians. Diocletian had him beaten to death on the palace steps. His body was thrown into the Tiber. Christians recovered it and buried him in the catacombs on the Appian Way, where the Basilica of San Sebastiano stands today.

He was shot through with arrows, survived, recovered, and chose to walk back into the danger rather than away from it. That sequence is the foundation of everything his patronage has meant for seventeen centuries.
