Saint Zélie Martin, Patron Saint of Mothers and Married Couples

Zélie Guérin was born in 1831 in Normandy, France, and once hoped to enter religious life herself before concluding it wasn't her calling. She trained instead as a lacemaker, building a successful business producing the fine, intricate Alençon lace her region was famous for. In 1858, she married Louis Martin, a watchmaker who had also once sought religious life, after a courtship of only three months. Together they had nine children, four of whom died in infancy, a grief Zélie carried while continuing to run her business and raise her surviving daughters, all five of whom entered religious life, including her youngest, Thérèse, who would become one of the most beloved saints in the modern Church. Zélie died of breast cancer in 1877 at just forty-five. In 2015, she and Louis became the first married couple in history to be canonized together, honored specifically as a model of holiness lived out through ordinary family life, marriage, work, and loss, rather than apart from it.

A Gift For...

  • A mother, especially one balancing work and family
  • A married couple, or anyone entering marriage
  • A parent who has lost a child
  • Someone working in a skilled trade or craft, or running their own business
  • A confirmation candidate drawn to a saint who found holiness in ordinary daily life
  • A Saints Louis and Zélie Martin's Day gift on July 12, for any parent or married couple in your life

A Confirmation Gift for Zélie

For a confirmation candidate drawn to a saint whose holiness looked like an ordinary, busy family life rather than a dramatic one, Zélie offers something rare and deeply relatable. Engrave a name and confirmation date, and let her example carry the meaning.

The Saint Zélie Martin Medal

This medal depicts her in period dress trimmed with fine lace, a nod to her work as an Alençon lacemaker, her halo radiating outward against an ornate patterned backdrop. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface. The result has a depth and precision that printed medals don't achieve.

Personalization and Engraving

The optional engraving on the reverse is rendered in Tangerine cursive, two lines, up to 20 characters each. Many choose a name and a wedding or birth date, or a short word like "family."

Saint Zélie Martin's feast day is July 12, and nearly a century and a half after her death, she and Louis remain the only parents of a saint ever canonized themselves, two ordinary working people whose family life became, in the Church's own words, a model for the rest of us.

The Metal Is the Image

Unlike stamped or printed medals, our black ink artwork is applied directly onto the surface, so every bright line in the illustration is the metal itself shining through, with detail no stamped medal can hold.

Hand-Poured Seal

Sealed with a durable, crystal-clear liquid glass coating to protect the vibrant image for a lifetime.

Exclusive Artwork

Custom-illustrated in-house, ensuring every saint's depiction is completely unique to our store.

FAQ

How long does production take?

Each medal is made to order in the USA. Production takes 5-6 business days before shipping. If you need it for a birthday, confirmation, or any specific occasion, order at least two weeks in advance to be safe.

What does the engraving look like?

The reverse is engraved in Tangerine cursive — an elegant, flowing script. You get two lines, up to 20 characters each. Names, dates, short quotes. The engraving is laser-etched directly into the metal, not printed.

Is the chain included?

Yes. Every medal ships on an 18-22" adjustable snake chain in the same finish as the medal - stainless steel or 18k gold. No need to source a chain separately.

Are the medals hypoallergenic?

Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

How durable is the coating?

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.

What's your return policy on engraved orders?

Because every medal is custom-made to order, engraved pieces cannot be returned unless there's a defect or error on our part. If anything arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us and we'll make it right.
