Timothy was the son of a Jewish Christian mother and a Greek father, raised in Lystra in Asia Minor, and became one of Paul's closest traveling companions after Paul recruited him during his second missionary journey. He is named as co-author on several New Testament letters, and two more, First and Second Timothy, are addressed to him directly, making him one of the few New Testament figures we can read a mentor's personal advice to by name. Around AD 64, Paul appointed him the first bishop of Ephesus. He held that post for decades before dying a martyr there around AD 97, killed while trying to stop a pagan festival he saw as incompatible with the faith he'd spent his life building.
