Seraphina, called Fina in her hometown of San Gimignano and still known by that name there today, was born around 1238 in Italy. At age ten she was struck by a severe, progressive illness that left her paralyzed and bedridden for the rest of her short life. She insisted on lying on a bare wooden board rather than a proper bed, treating her suffering as a form of prayer, and she continued to spin wool for the poor from where she lay even as her condition worsened. She died in 1253 at fifteen, and according to tradition, white violets sprang up from the wooden board the moment she passed. She's buried in the Collegiate Church of San Gimignano, where she remains the city's patron saint (still celebrated locally as Santa Fina) and a source of devotion for people living with paralysis, disability, and long-term illness.
