About Saint Rose of Lima - Rosa de Lima

Isabel Flores de Oliva was born in Lima, Peru in 1586, the daughter of a Spanish soldier and a Peruvian woman of partially indigenous descent. Her mother called her Rosa - Rose - because of the beauty of her face as an infant, and the name stayed. She was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

She joined the Third Order of Saint Dominic at age 20, living as a consecrated laywoman in a small hermitage in her family's garden rather than entering a convent. She practiced severe penance and experienced documented mystical visions. She also ran an infirmary in her home, caring for sick children, the elderly, and enslaved people at a time when nobody else in Lima's colonial society was doing this systematically.

She died in 1617 at age 31. Her funeral in Lima drew crowds so large that her burial had to be delayed for several days. The city essentially stopped. She was canonized in 1671 and her feast day is celebrated on August 23 in the universal Church, though her native Peru still celebrates it as a national holiday on August 30.

Her Patronage

She is the patron saint of Latin America, the Philippines, people who are ridiculed for their piety, and those who suffer for their faith in environments that discourage it. In Hispanic Catholic communities across the United States, she is not simply a saint. She is a source of cultural identity, family devotion, and national pride carried across generations and across borders. In Lima, her feast is not a quiet observance. The city marks it with processions, flowers, and celebrations that have continued uninterrupted for over 350 years. She has been gone since 1617 and Peru has not forgotten her for a single year since.

The crown of roses references both her name and her most famous act of private devotion: she wore a heavy silver crown of thorns hidden entirely beneath a wreath of roses, bearing the pain of Christ in secret while presenting only beauty to the world. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself - black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image.
