Rosalia was born into a noble Norman family in Palermo in 1130, said to descend from Charlemagne himself. Rather than the life of privilege that awaited her, she withdrew from the world as a young woman and became a hermit, eventually settling alone in a cave on Monte Pellegrino, where she lived in prayer and solitude until her death around 1166. For nearly five hundred years, she was largely forgotten. Then, in 1624, plague swept through Palermo, killing thousands. According to tradition, Rosalia appeared in a vision to a local hunter, directing him to her cave and asking that her remains be carried through the city in procession. When they finally located her bones exactly where she'd described and did as she asked, the plague stopped within days. Palermo declared her its patron saint on the spot, and devotion to her spread across Sicily and wherever Sicilian communities settled afterward. She remains, to this day, the city's most beloved saint, celebrated each July with one of Italy's largest religious festivals.
