Saint Peter, Patron Saint of the Church and Locksmiths

Peter was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, originally named Simon, before Jesus called him away from his nets and renamed him Peter, from the Greek for "rock," declaring, "On this rock I will build my Church." He became the leader of the Twelve Apostles and, by Catholic tradition, the first pope, entrusted by Christ with what Scripture calls "the keys of the kingdom of heaven," the image that has defined his iconography ever since. Peter wasn't without failure. He denied knowing Christ three times the night before the crucifixion, a moment of very public weakness that makes his later courage all the more striking. He went on to lead the early Church through its first, most dangerous decades, and was martyred in Rome under Nero, traditionally crucified upside down at his own request, believing himself unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. The keys he carries in devotional art, tied directly to his role as the Church's foundation, later made him patron of locksmiths as well, alongside his broader patronage of popes, the Church itself, fishermen, and net makers.
