Saint Panteleimon, Patron Saint of Physicians and Healers

Panteleimon was born around 275 AD in Nicomedia and trained as a physician, eventually serving in the court of Emperor Galerius. Instructed in Christianity, he began treating patients for free, including the poor who couldn't afford care elsewhere, and is remembered for healing without regard for status or payment. During Diocletian's persecution he was denounced for his faith, subjected to repeated attempts at execution that tradition holds he survived unharmed until the final blow, and was martyred around 305 AD. He's venerated in both the Eastern and Western Church as one of the Holy Unmercenary Healers, physician saints who treated patients without charging for it, and remains a major patron of the medical profession.
