Olaf Haraldsson was born around 995, into the turbulent world of Viking-age Scandinavia, and spent his early years as a warrior and raider before converting to Christianity and returning home determined to unify and Christianize Norway. He ruled as king from 1015 to 1028, often through harsh and forceful methods that made him as many enemies as followers. Exiled by a rebellion backed by the Danish crown, Olaf spent two years in exile before returning to reclaim his throne, only to be killed in battle at Stiklestad in 1030. What happened next surprised even his own contemporaries: within a year, Bishop Grimkell canonized him locally, and reports of miracles at his grave spread quickly across Scandinavia. The cult that grew around Olaf did something his reign in life never fully managed, it unified Norway and completed its conversion to Christianity, giving the country a shared identity that outlasted every dispute of his actual rule. Pope Alexander III confirmed his canonization for the universal Church in 1164. He remains Norway's patron saint and national symbol to this day, known as Rex Perpetuus Norvegiae, Norway's Eternal King.
