Saint Moses the Black, Patron Saint of Africa and Nonviolence

Moses, also known as Moses the Ethiopian, was born around 330 AD, likely in Nubia or Ethiopia, and spent his early life enslaved in the household of an Egyptian official before being driven out for theft and eventually murder. He became the leader of a violent band of robbers, feared throughout the region, until he sought refuge with a community of monks in the Egyptian desert. Something in their quiet, disciplined life stopped him cold. He confessed the full weight of his past to a priest named Macarius, was baptized, and spent the rest of his life pursuing the opposite of everything he'd once been, radical humility, gentleness, and a refusal to judge anyone else's failings. One of his most quoted teachings came when monks asked him to help judge a brother who had sinned: he arrived carrying a leaking basket of sand on his back, explaining that his own sins were trailing behind him where he couldn't see them, while everyone could see the other man's. When raiders attacked his monastery in 405, Moses refused to flee or defend himself, choosing to die as he'd lived, without violence. He was killed along with several fellow monks, at around seventy-five years old.

A Confirmation Gift for Moses

Few saints offer as direct a proof that a person's worst chapter doesn't have to be their last one. For a confirmation candidate who wants a saint who understands real struggle, engrave a name and confirmation date, and let his transformation carry the meaning.

The Saint Moses the Black Medal

This medal depicts him bearded and robed, a tau-shaped staff in one hand and a basket of spilling sand over his shoulder, a reference to his own teaching on humility, his halo radiating outward. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface. The result has a depth and precision that printed medals don't achieve.

Personalization and Engraving

The optional engraving on the reverse is rendered in Tangerine cursive, two lines, up to 20 characters each. Many choose a name and a meaningful date, while others engrave "transformed" or simply his own teaching, "weep for your sins."

Saint Moses the Black's feast day is August 28, and nearly seventeen centuries later, his teaching on humility, carried in a basket of sand slipping through his fingers, remains one of the most quoted sayings to survive from the Desert Fathers.

The Metal Is the Image

Unlike stamped or printed medals, our black ink artwork is applied directly onto the surface, so every bright line in the illustration is the metal itself shining through, with detail no stamped medal can hold.

Hand-Poured Seal

Sealed with a durable, crystal-clear liquid glass coating to protect the vibrant image for a lifetime.

Exclusive Artwork

Custom-illustrated in-house, ensuring every saint's depiction is completely unique to our store.

FAQ

How long does production take?

Each medal is made to order in the USA. Production takes 5-6 business days before shipping. If you need it for a birthday, confirmation, or any specific occasion, order at least two weeks in advance to be safe.

What does the engraving look like?

The reverse is engraved in Tangerine cursive — an elegant, flowing script. You get two lines, up to 20 characters each. Names, dates, short quotes. The engraving is laser-etched directly into the metal, not printed.

Is the chain included?

Yes. Every medal ships on an 18-22" adjustable snake chain in the same finish as the medal - stainless steel or 18k gold. No need to source a chain separately.

Are the medals hypoallergenic?

Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

How durable is the coating?

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.

What's your return policy on engraved orders?

Because every medal is custom-made to order, engraved pieces cannot be returned unless there's a defect or error on our part. If anything arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us and we'll make it right.
