Saint Matthias, Patron Saint of Recovery

Matthias was not one of the original twelve. He was chosen after the resurrection, after Judas had betrayed Christ and was gone, to fill the place left empty among the apostles. The community gathered, named two candidates, prayed, and drew by lot. Matthias was chosen. He took his place among the eleven and preached as a full apostle until his martyrdom, in Judea, Ethiopia, and possibly near the Caspian Sea, according to tradition. He was not chosen first. He was chosen to fill a broken place, by a community that prayed and trusted the outcome to God, and that has made him the patron of a specific kind of person ever since. Recovery is not a beginning. It is a replacement of one way of living with another, chosen deliberately, one day at a time, after something has already collapsed. Matthias is the apostle for that exact situation.

A Gift For...

  • Someone in recovery, or marking a sobriety milestone
  • A person who loves someone in recovery and wants to walk it with them
  • Anyone rebuilding a life after something fell apart
  • A carpenter or tailor, his lesser known patronages
  • A baptism gift, engraved with the child's name and date
  • Anyone who needs "He was chosen. So were you" close by

A Confirmation Gift for Matthias

He was the apostle chosen last. For a confirmation candidate who has ever felt like a second choice, that's not a footnote, it's the whole point. Engrave a name and confirmation date.

The Saint Matthias Medal

This medal depicts Matthias full face, bearded, direct, composed, holding a raised axe in one hand, his traditional symbol and the instrument of his martyrdom, and an open book in the other, referencing the Gospel he was chosen to carry. The frontal composition is unusual in the catalog, where most saints are shown in profile. Matthias faces the viewer directly. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface.

Personalization and Engraving

The optional engraving on the reverse is rendered in Tangerine cursive. Two lines, up to 20 characters each. Two lines that fit: "He was chosen." and "So were you." For a recovery milestone, most people engrave a name and a sobriety date.

Saint Matthias's feast day is May 14. He was chosen last, and he held his place for the rest of his life.

The Metal Is the Image

Unlike stamped or printed medals, our black ink artwork is applied directly onto the surface, so every bright line in the illustration is the metal itself shining through, with detail no stamped medal can hold.

Hand-Poured Seal

Sealed with a durable, crystal-clear liquid glass coating to protect the vibrant image for a lifetime.

Exclusive Artwork

Custom-illustrated in-house, ensuring every saint's depiction is completely unique to our store.

FAQ

How long does production take?

Each medal is made to order in the USA. Production takes 5-6 business days before shipping. If you need it for a birthday, confirmation, or any specific occasion, order at least two weeks in advance to be safe.

What does the engraving look like?

The reverse is engraved in Tangerine cursive — an elegant, flowing script. You get two lines, up to 20 characters each. Names, dates, short quotes. The engraving is laser-etched directly into the metal, not printed.

Is the chain included?

Yes. Every medal ships on an 18-22" adjustable snake chain in the same finish as the medal - stainless steel or 18k gold. No need to source a chain separately.

Are the medals hypoallergenic?

Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

How durable is the coating?

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.

What's your return policy on engraved orders?

Because every medal is custom-made to order, engraved pieces cannot be returned unless there's a defect or error on our part. If anything arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us and we'll make it right.
