He was a tax collector so despised by his own people that sharing a meal with him scandalized the religious authorities of his day, and centuries later, he became the patron saint of the profession he left behind. Saint Matthew, Patron Saint of Accountants, Bankers & Evangelists

Matthew, also called Levi, worked as a tax collector in Capernaum, a profession so reviled in first-century Judea that tax collectors were grouped with sinners and traitors in the public imagination. He was sitting at his collection booth, doing the job nobody trusted him for, when Jesus passed by and said only, "Follow me." Matthew got up, left the money on the table, and became one of the Twelve Apostles. He went on to write the Gospel that bears his name, the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament, and is remembered today as one of the Four Evangelists, symbolized by a winged man among the four living creatures of scripture. That same head for numbers and years of handling other people's money have made him, across centuries of tradition, the natural patron for accountants, bankers, and bookkeepers, the rare saint whose old day job and new calling both still matter.

A Gift For...

  • An accountant, bookkeeper, or auditor, especially around tax season
  • Someone starting a career in banking or finance, or celebrating a CPA license
  • Anyone who came to faith through an unexpected, sudden calling
  • A confirmation candidate drawn to the Gospels or the life of an apostle
  • Anyone named Matthew, for a birthday or personal milestone
  • A Saint Matthew's Day gift on September 21, for the numbers person or the apostle enthusiast in your life

A Confirmation Gift for Matthew

Few apostles show as clearly that a calling can arrive mid-ordinary-day, no warning, no résumé required. He's also a natural fit for a practical-minded confirmation candidate who wants a saint with a real, useful specialty. Engrave a name and confirmation date, and let his story carry the rest.

The Saint Matthew Medal

This medal depicts him bearded and robed, an open Gospel in one hand and a money bag in the other, a direct nod to his years as a tax collector, with a small winged angel, his evangelist symbol, at his shoulder. His halo radiates outward. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface. The result has a depth and precision that printed medals don't achieve.

Personalization and Engraving

The optional engraving on the reverse is rendered in Tangerine cursive, two lines, up to 20 characters each. Many choose a name and confirmation date, others a CPA exam date or first day at a firm, and some simply engrave "Follow me," the two words that changed his life.

Saint Matthew's feast day is September 21 in the Western Church and November 16 in the Eastern Church, and two thousand years later, he remains the only apostle whose day job is still an active job title.

The Metal Is the Image

Unlike stamped or printed medals, our black ink artwork is applied directly onto the surface, so every bright line in the illustration is the metal itself shining through, with detail no stamped medal can hold.

Hand-Poured Seal

Sealed with a durable, crystal-clear liquid glass coating to protect the vibrant image for a lifetime.

Exclusive Artwork

Custom-illustrated in-house, ensuring every saint's depiction is completely unique to our store.

FAQ

How long does production take?

Each medal is made to order in the USA. Production takes 5-6 business days before shipping. If you need it for a birthday, confirmation, or any specific occasion, order at least two weeks in advance to be safe.

What does the engraving look like?

The reverse is engraved in Tangerine cursive — an elegant, flowing script. You get two lines, up to 20 characters each. Names, dates, short quotes. The engraving is laser-etched directly into the metal, not printed.

Is the chain included?

Yes. Every medal ships on an 18-22" adjustable snake chain in the same finish as the medal - stainless steel or 18k gold. No need to source a chain separately.

Are the medals hypoallergenic?

Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

How durable is the coating?

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.

What's your return policy on engraved orders?

Because every medal is custom-made to order, engraved pieces cannot be returned unless there's a defect or error on our part. If anything arrives damaged or incorrect, contact us and we'll make it right.
