About Saint Martha of Bethany

Martha of Bethany appears three times in the Gospels, and each time she is doing something. She is hosting Jesus in her home while her sister Mary sits and listens. She is the one who walks out to meet Jesus on the road after her brother Lazarus dies, before Mary has moved from the house. And she is present at the anointing of Jesus at Bethany, serving - always serving - while something larger is unfolding around her.

That road encounter with Jesus is the one most people forget. Martha walks out, tells him her brother is dead, and Jesus says: "I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?" Her answer - "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God" - is the second explicit confession of Christ's divinity in the New Testament. The first was Peter's. Martha's tends to get overlooked because it comes right before a miracle and right after a scene where she was gently corrected for being too busy. That framing has followed her for two thousand years and does not do her justice.

After the Ascension, tradition holds that Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were put on a ship without sails or oars by persecutors in Jerusalem and set adrift. The ship landed in Provence, in the South of France, where they spent the rest of their lives preaching. Martha settled near Tarascon, where she is venerated to this day. Her relics remain there, in the Collégiale Sainte-Marthe, a collegiate church built in her honor.

Saint Martha of Bethany's feast day is July 29. The Gospel named her specifically among those Jesus loved - and she spent her entire life making sure everyone around her was fed, housed, and cared for.

Her Patronage

Martha of Bethany is the patron saint of cooks, homemakers, domestic workers, waiters and waitresses, hotel keepers, and all who work in hospitality. She is sought by anyone whose daily work consists of taking care of others - the nurse, the housekeeper, the caregiver, the person who keeps everything running while everyone else receives the benefit of their labor without fully registering it.

People seek her intercession for the courage to keep serving without bitterness, for faith that holds in the face of grief, and for the strength to speak plainly about what they believe even when the moment is not convenient. She is a natural patron for anyone who identifies more with doing the work than with being praised for it. She is also an appropriate saint for those who have felt that their practical contributions were worth less than the contemplative or visible ones made by people around them. Her story addresses that directly, and not in the way it is usually summarized.

Her feast day is July 29. The Gospel described her as someone Jesus loved by name. That is stated once in Scripture and applied to very few people.

This medal depicts Martha standing full-figure, facing left, mid-movement. She wears a veil and long robes. In one hand she holds a broom; in the other, a water jug. An ornate scroll work border frames the entire composition. A halo marks her as a saint, but the posture is not devotional. She is shown in motion, carrying something, going somewhere. It is one of the few full-figure saint medals in this catalog that shows its subject actively working rather than standing in a formal pose, and for Martha specifically, that distinction matters. The metal forms the illustration itself - black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the gold or silver shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface.
