According to Christian tradition, Longinus was the Roman centurion present at the crucifixion who pierced the side of Jesus with his spear, causing the flow of blood and water recorded in the Gospel of John. Legend holds that Longinus suffered from failing eyesight, and when that same blood touched his eyes, his sight was restored. Moved by what he had witnessed, he left the Roman army, sought instruction from the apostles, and spent the rest of his life as a monk in Cappadocia, converting many to the faith. He was eventually arrested for his beliefs and martyred, reportedly restoring the sight of the very official who condemned him, in the same manner his own sight had been restored. He is venerated today in the Catholic, Orthodox, and Armenian churches alike.

This medal depicts him in Roman military dress, spear in one hand and the other raised toward heaven, the traditional gesture of his witness at the cross, his halo radiating outward. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image.
