Leo I was elected pope in 440 while away on a diplomatic mission in Gaul, and spent his twenty-one years in office doing exactly that kind of work at scale. He wrote the Tome of Leo, a letter on the dual nature of Christ that became the doctrinal backbone of the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and is still read as one of the clearest theological documents the early Church produced. A year later, with Attila's army at the edge of Roman territory and the city defenseless, Leo went out to negotiate in person and the Huns withdrew. He died in 461, and in 1754 was named a Doctor of the Church, one of only thirty-seven in Catholic history.
