Jane was born into a noble family in Dijon, France, in 1572, and married Baron Christophe de Rabutin-Chantal at twenty-one. By every account, their marriage was a genuinely happy one, four children survived into adulthood, and Jane ran their estate with real skill. After nine years of marriage, Christophe was killed in a hunting accident, leaving Jane a young widow. The years that followed were harder than the loss itself: she moved into her father-in-law's household, where she endured years of difficulty under his authority before finding her footing again. In 1604, she heard a Lenten sermon by Francis de Sales and placed herself under his spiritual direction, beginning a friendship that would define the rest of her life. In 1610, with her children provided for, she left to found the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary alongside Francis, reportedly stepping over her own teenage son, who had thrown himself across the doorway to stop her from going. After Francis de Sales died in 1622, Jane led the order alone for nearly twenty more years, growing it from thirteen houses to well over eighty by the time of her own death in 1641. She was canonized in 1767.
