Homobonus was a successful cloth merchant in Cremona, Italy, in the 12th century, a layman who never took holy orders and spent his entire life working an ordinary trade. What set him apart was how he ran it: he was known throughout Cremona for scrupulous honesty in his dealings and for giving away a significant share of his earnings to the poor, treating his success as something to be shared rather than hoarded. He died suddenly in 1197, reportedly collapsing during morning Mass with his arms outstretched in prayer. The people of Cremona were so certain of his holiness that they petitioned Rome almost immediately, and Pope Innocent III canonized him just fourteen months later, one of the fastest canonizations in the history of the Church. He remains one of relatively few saints who spent his entire life as a working layman rather than clergy or a member of a religious order, a businessman recognized as holy specifically because of how he did business.
