Hedwig was born around 1174 in Bavaria and married Henry I the Bearded, becoming Duchess of Silesia, a region of medieval Poland. Throughout her marriage she used her position and wealth to found numerous churches, monasteries, and hospitals, becoming one of the most significant religious patrons in the region's history. In 1241 she witnessed the death of her son, Henry II the Pious, at the Battle of Legnica against invading Mongol forces. After her husband's death in 1238, she entered a Cistercian monastery as a lay sister, giving away her remaining wealth and devoting herself entirely to the poor, the sick, and orphaned children. She died in 1243 and was canonized in 1267, remembered for a life that combined real political power with total personal renunciation.
