Saint Giles, Patron Saint of the Disabled, Beggars and Hermits
Giles was a Greek-born hermit who settled in the forests near Nîmes, France, in the 7th century, living alone with a hind as his only companion. When the king's hunters pursued the deer to his hermitage, an arrow meant for it struck Giles instead, and the injury he carried afterward became the direct reason he's remembered as patron of the disabled. The king who'd ordered the hunt was so struck by the hermit's grace that he built him a monastery in the same valley, which grew into a major stop on the Camino de Santiago. Giles is honored today as patron of beggars, the poor, lepers, epileptics, and the disabled.
