Gabriel appears twice in the Gospel of Luke as God's chosen messenger, first announcing to the priest Zechariah that his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear a son, John the Baptist, then appearing to a young woman in Nazareth to deliver the news of the Annunciation, that she would bear a son called Jesus. His name means "God is my strength," and his defining role, delivering the message no one else could carry, has made him the patron of anyone whose work is communication: postal workers, broadcasters, telecommunications workers, and diplomats. Catholic tradition holds him, alongside Michael and Raphael, as one of only three archangels named directly in scripture.
