Saint Faustina Kowalska, Apostle of Divine Mercy

Born Helena Kowalska in 1905 to a poor, devout family in rural Poland, Faustina felt called to religious life as a child but had to work as a housekeeper for years before her parents allowed her to enter a convent. She joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw in 1925 and spent most of her short life in ordinary convent work, cooking, gardening, keeping the door. What set her apart happened privately. Beginning in 1931, she reported a series of visions of Jesus, who appeared to her dressed in white with red and pale rays streaming from his heart, and asked her to have an image painted exactly as she saw it, inscribed "Jesus, I trust in You." She recorded these visions and conversations in a diary that would later become a spiritual classic. She died in 1938 at just thirty-three, largely unknown outside her own convent. Decades later, a young Polish bishop named Karol Wojtyla took up her cause. As Pope John Paul II, he beatified her in 1993, canonized her in 2000, and established Divine Mercy Sunday for the entire Church in her honor.
