Erasmus, also known as Saint Elmo, served as a bishop in the region of Formia, Italy, during the early fourth century, a period of intense persecution under Emperor Diocletian. He was martyred for his faith, and stories of his intercession for sailors caught in dangerous storms spread widely in the centuries that followed, eventually establishing him as one of the Church's principal patrons of those who work at sea. His name endures today in "St. Elmo's fire," the glowing electrical discharge sailors have long observed on ship masts during storms and interpreted as a sign of his protection. He's also traditionally invoked for abdominal and stomach ailments.
