Saint Eligius, Patron Saint of Horses

Eligius was a 7th century bishop and former royal goldsmith, remembered in tradition for a gift that had nothing to do with metalwork, a steadiness with horses that let him calm and heal animals no one else could approach. That reputation made him the patron of farriers, riders, and horse owners for centuries after his death. He spent his later years as Bishop of Noyon, but the horses were never far from his story.

The Saint Eligius Medal

This medal depicts Eligius with his hand resting on a horse's face, the quiet trust between an animal and the one who cares for it. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. A shatterproof liquid glass coating seals the surface. Eligius is also the patron saint of goldsmiths and metalworkers, and of veterinarians, each shown in a separate composition on this site.

Personalization and Engraving

Saint Eligius's feast day is December 1, for centuries a day when horses were blessed. Some stables still do.
