Dominic de Guzman was born around 1170 in Caleruega, Spain, and ordained a priest after years of theological study. Traveling through southern France, he encountered widespread Cathar heresy and, rather than respond with force, chose persuasion, adopting an ascetic, itinerant lifestyle to preach directly and credibly to people the Church had largely stopped reaching. This became the foundation of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, which he founded and saw approved by the pope in 1216. He and his order are traditionally credited with spreading devotion to the rosary throughout Europe, a practice that remains one of Catholicism's most widely used forms of prayer. He died in 1221 in Bologna and was canonized just thirteen years later.
