Colette was born in 1381 in Corbie, Picardy, the daughter of a carpenter, and orphaned at eighteen. After years spent searching for the right religious life, she became a hermit, then experienced visions calling her to reform the Poor Clares back to their original ideals of poverty and austerity. Authorized in 1406, she founded eighteen reformed monasteries across France, Lorraine, and the German territories over the following decades. She's remembered specifically for documented accounts of interceding in difficult childbirths and reviving a stillborn infant, which is why mothers have turned to her for over 600 years. She died in Ghent in 1447 and was canonized in 1807.
