Casimir was born in 1458, the third of thirteen children of King Casimir IV of Poland, raised inside a court that expected him to rule. At fifteen he was sent to the Hungarian border at the head of an army to seize the throne on his father's orders, a war he came to believe was unjust, and he turned his troops back rather than continue it. He refused an arranged royal marriage, lived plainly inside the palace, slept little, gave generously to the poor, and kept a lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary that reportedly stayed with him through his final illness. He died of tuberculosis in 1484 at twenty-five and is buried in Vilnius Cathedral, where he remains patron of both Poland and Lithuania.
