Born in 1550 in Bucchianico, Camillus fought as a soldier against the Ottomans from age sixteen, then fell into a gambling habit so severe that by his twenties he'd lost everything he owned. A conversion experience at a Capuchin friary turned him around, but an incurable leg wound kept him out of religious life, so he went to work instead at San Giacomo Hospital in Rome. He rose to superintendent and was appalled by what he saw: patients neglected, uncared for, dying alone. In the 1580s he founded the Camillians, a religious order built entirely around bedside care, marked by the red cross he chose as their emblem. He was canonized in 1746.
