Bernadette was born in 1844 in Lourdes, France, the eldest child of a miller's family that had fallen into deep poverty, so poor they lived in the basement of a former prison. Sickly with asthma since early childhood and considered a dull, unremarkable student, she was fourteen and hadn't even made her First Communion when, on February 11, 1858, she saw a beautiful young woman appear in a grotto while gathering firewood with her sister. Eighteen apparitions followed over the coming months. On March 25th, the figure finally identified herself: "I am the Immaculate Conception." At her direction, Bernadette dug into completely dry ground and uncovered a spring that has since been associated with countless reported healings. Her claims were met with real skepticism and mockery, from both her own community and church authorities, before the local bishop formally approved the apparitions in 1862. Seeking to escape the fame that followed, Bernadette entered a convent in Nevers, where she lived quietly, often gravely ill, until her death in 1879 at just thirty-five. When her body was exhumed decades later for examination, it was found remarkably incorrupt, still visible today in a glass reliquary in Nevers. She was canonized in 1933.
