Saint Basil the Great, Patron Saint of Hospital Administrators and Reformers

Basil was born around 330 in Caesarea in Cappadocia to a family already known for its faith, and studied rhetoric and philosophy in Constantinople and Athens before turning fully to a religious life. As Bishop of Caesarea, he confronted both theological controversy and a genuine humanitarian crisis, most notably a severe famine, by selling his family's inheritance to fund direct relief and eventually founding the Basiliad, a large charitable complex that included a hospital, a hospice for the dying, and housing for the poor, considered one of the first institutions of its kind. He also wrote extensively on monastic life, authored a Rule still followed today, and composed a version of the Divine Liturgy still used in Orthodox worship. He died in 379 and is honored as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs alongside Gregory Nazianzen and John Chrysostom, and as a Doctor of the Church.
