Barbara was the daughter of a wealthy pagan man in the third century who, fearing her beauty would draw suitors he couldn't control, locked her away in a tower he'd built specifically to isolate her. While imprisoned there, she came to faith in secret, and when workers were building a bathhouse for her at her father's order, she instructed them to add a third window to the two they'd planned, a quiet declaration of her belief in the Holy Trinity. When her father discovered what she'd done and that she'd converted to Christianity, he denounced her to the authorities himself. She was tortured and ultimately beheaded, by her own father's hand, according to the account. Tradition holds that he was struck and killed by lightning shortly afterward, on his way home, which is why she's invoked to this day against sudden death, lightning, and explosions. The tower she was confined in, and the precise, deliberate act of adding a third window to it, is what eventually made her the patron of those who design and build: architects, engineers, and mathematicians among them.
