Saint Angela Merici, Patron Saint of Teachers, Educators and Orphans
Angela Merici was orphaned as a young woman in Renaissance Italy, losing her parents and a sister before she'd found her own path. She joined the Third Order of St. Francis, and during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1524 she went temporarily blind, recovering only after praying before a crucifix. At sixty, in Brescia in 1535, she founded the Company of St. Ursula with twelve companions, an entirely new kind of religious life: women consecrated to a single purpose, educating girls, who took no formal vows and remained in their own homes rather than entering a convent. It grew into the Ursuline order, still teaching worldwide five centuries later. Angela is honored today as patron of teachers, educators, orphans, and those recovering from the loss of a parent.

The medal shows Angela haloed, in the habit of a Franciscan tertiary, holding the pilgrim's staff from her journey to the Holy Land and the book of the teaching order she founded, with the ladder from her vision rising behind her. The natural gold or silver of the metal forms the illustration itself. Black ink is applied to the pendant surface and the metal shows through as the image. Yes. Both options are made from medical-grade 316 stainless steel. The 18k gold finish is applied over that same 316 stainless steel base. Safe for sensitive skin.

Each medal is hand-sealed with a shatterproof liquid glass coating poured directly over the surface. It protects the artwork from scratches and moisture without dulling the detail or altering the color. It's designed to be worn daily, not kept in a drawer.
