Amand was born around 584 into a noble family in western France and became a monk at twenty despite his family's objections, later living an austere, disciplined life under Bishop Austregisilus in Bourges for fifteen years. Around 628 he was sent out as a missionary bishop into Merovingian territory, evangelizing pagan communities across Flanders who initially resisted and even attacked him before his persistence and reported miracles won them over. He briefly served as Bishop of Maastricht, founded several monasteries, and continued missionary work into old age, dying at ninety after nearly five decades in the field. His long association with hospitality and welcome, central to both his missionary method and monastic foundations, eventually made him the patron of brewers, innkeepers, bartenders, and vintners.
